Description
I live less than a mile away from the public transit station nearest my house. I decided to walk home very late one night and looking back on it, I made a really bad decision. I live in a family neighborhood with tricycles strewn on the sidewalks and minivans parked in the driveways. My walks home in the evening are uneventful with the occasional honk or wink, so I figured it would be no different hours later. Oh, how I tricked myself with potentially disastrous consequences. Less than three minutes into my walk, I noticed a little black car slow down and stop ahead of me. I crossed to the other side of the street and picked up my pace, but the driver TURNED THE CAR AROUND, stopped right next to me, and offered me a ride. He could have been trying to be nice, but all I could think about was how absolutely vulnerable I was at that moment. He could have taken anything he wanted from me. Anything. I firmly said, "No, thank you," and kept walking. He eventually drove away. You can imagine how relieved I was when the car's headlights disappeared. For a few moments, I had thought that my life as I knew it was over. The next day, my relief quickly turned to infuriation. Half (50%) of reported sexual assault cases occur within one mile of the victim's home.' I hate that danger strips me of the autonomy to go where I want, when I want. I hate that if something had happened (heaven forbid), people would likely have said, "She should have known better than to walk alone at night." Statements like that reflect the sad reality that potential sexual assault is an accepted part of a woman's life! This viewpoint would temper any outcry of "What that man did was wrong and he should be punished" and blame the victim for what happened to her. Women are taught how to protect themselves against assault (i.e., park under a streetlamp, carry mace, use the buddy system), while men get relatively few messages about how to prevent male violence against women. Something is wrong with this situation.
